In 2019, the American Automobile Association (AAA) surveyed the general population to gauge their feelings about adopting electric transportation as the means for their next vehicle.
Based on the results, AAA estimates that approximately 40 million Americans will be purchasing an electric car the next time they are in the market for a vehicle. Most of the respondents who indicated they would be “likely to buy” an electric vehicle come from the Millennial and Generation X demographics, representing consumers born in 1980 or later.
Why choose an electric vehicle?
According to these respondents, their reasons for converting to an electric vehicle are to help the environment, to control long-term costs, to fulfill a desire to adopt cutting edge technology and are motivated by the desire to be in the carpool lane. In fact, they feel so strongly about purchasing an electric vehicle that most would pay up to $4,000 more for this new technology.
Actual electric vehicle sales are reflecting this new demand. In 2018, sales of electric vehicles in the United States alone were 81% higher than in 2017. According to Julia Pyper with Green Tech Media, much of this sudden increase was a result of the success of Tesla’s Model 3, which sold 139,782 vehicles in 2018. All of Tesla’s sales combined made up 50% of the total electric vehicle sales during last year!
What do consumers feel is most important in choosing an electric vehicle?
AAA’s survey shows reliability as being the biggest consideration in purchasing an electric vehicle. Did you know that electric vehicles have fewer moving parts than a conventional engine? In fact, they require only a single-gear transmission and have fewer parts that could give consumers problems such as a radiator, exhaust system, and catalytic converter!
If you’re like most average Americans, you likely drive about 40 miles a day. Perhaps your next vehicle will be electric, and surpass your expectations by carrying you a full 150 miles or more on just one charge!
