Did you know that your leftover dinner scraps can be transformed into energy? Biomethanation is a process by which organic remains (such as table scraps) are given a second life as biomethane – a renewable natural gas that has many uses, including providing fuel for vehicle fleets and for heating homes and buildings. Biomethanation reduces the amount of material ending up in a landfill, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and moves us closer to a clean energy economy and energy independence.
The transportation industry is in a state of flux and evolution. There is a shift from non-renewable fossil fuels to renewable energy and alternative fuels such as electricity, hydrogen, biofuels and natural gas. Education and outreach efforts by many different organizations have informed the public and there is now a widespread awareness of the detrimental effects fossil fuels have on the environment. Using these cleaner fuels has illustrated the potential to eliminate almost all of the toxic substances released into the atmosphere by transportation.
Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) is a gas made from methane produced from the decomposition of biomass (e.g. organic matter from a variety of sources including food and agricultural waste, cattle and wastewater treatment). The biogas needs to have all non-methane components removed (through scrubbing and conditioning) to produce RNG ready to be injected into existing natural gas pipelines.
It is considered a renewable fuel because capturing methane for combustion from biomass sources as prevents it from being released directly into the atmosphere and contributing to the greenhouse gas problem. Utilizing it allows the recycling of carbon already present and circulating in the environment, as opposed to burning fossil fuels which results in the release of new carbon into the atmosphere.

Transportation options will be transformed as the industry starts utilizing alternative fuels to a greater degree and there is a greater and greater demand for these technologies.
