While we often think of big business’s role in conserving energy through efficient office designs and clean operating manufacturing plants, we can all contribute to clean energy and benefit from new and innovative home building solutions. Here are just a few efficient energy systems that have become popular in 2020.
- Solar energy. The use of solar powers to generate electricity has been on the rise in North America due to tax credits, energy buy-back programs, and of course, lower monthly utility bills. Solar energy consumers feel good about using a clean, renewable energy source and being free (or mostly free) of the rising prices of power from local utility companies.
The initial investment for solar energy doesn’t come without a hefty price tag, though. In 2020, the average price of a modest 6-kilowatt panel system after tax credits was $13,142 and often these investments can take up to 20 years to pay off.
- Clean and sustainable building products. Homebuilding manufacturers are reacting to consumers’ desires for healthier homes by introducing more and more materials derived from sustainable sources and/or containing only non-toxic materials. For example, Columbia Forest Products introduced their UV WoodTM These LEED compliant plywood panels are free of formaldehyde, use a soy-based glue, and are FSC certified for being harvested from responsibly managed forests.
- Clean Air and Ventilation Systems. 2020 has brought about a renewed focus on the actual cleanliness of the air circulating in our homes. While keeping windows and doors open may increase ventilation, doing so also brings dust, pollen, smoke, and other pollutants into the home. New mechanical ventilation heat recovery units filter these particles from the air during the air circulation process. Ductless air heating and cooling systems also help keep the air clean by eliminating ductwork that can be both inefficient and dusty.
