Clean Energy Leads to Jobs and Economic Stability for Louisiana Families

December 24, 2020 by RVCCC Leave a Comment

Soon 340 families in Baton Rouge could benefit from new jobs created in phase one of a $1.25 billion capital investment by Fidelis Infrastructure and Grön Fuels to build the world’s largest renewable diesel fuel project at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge in Louisiana.  But that’s just the start.

In total, this $9.2 billion project is estimated to bring 1,025 new direct jobs to the area with an average annual salary of $98,595 (plus benefits). Louisiana Economic Development estimates a broader impact resulting in the creation of another 4,560 indirect jobs in the area.

renewable diesel fuelWhat is this project that will create such enormous benefits?

Grön Fuels, LLC plans to build a renewable diesel and jet fuel option facility at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge using Haldor Topsoe’s proprietary HydroFlex hydrotreating and H2bridge hydrogen technologies.  These combined technologies will allow Grön Fuels to produce renewable bio-hydrogen used in the production of renewable diesel fuel.

The facility will further produce an estimated 60,000 barrels per day of renewable diesel from feedstocks such as soybean and canola oils, distillers corn oil, used cooking oil, and other renewables.  These low-carbon fuels can be used as a direct substitute for conventional fuel in cars, trucks, and airplanes; and they can be transported using existing pipelines and kept in existing storage tanks.

Why is this news monumental?

Although investors will not award final approval for this project until 2021, these plans are very exciting for the state of Louisiana.  The size of this facility will bring enormous economic benefit to the families of Baton Rouge and the surrounding communities, both as direct jobs and as the increased financial inflow to the community-at-large.  Secondly, the convergence of technologies creates an overall carbon-negative model resulting in cleaner air and an abundance of renewable fuel.
